In 2016, Merkal Calzados implemented Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations as a core element of a cloud-first enterprise architecture designed with TOGAF. The engagement was initiated through an executive search placement by Robert Walters to serve as interim manager for Opcapita, reporting directly to the CEO, and addressed IT consolidation across the retailer with 1,200 employees, 210 stores, an ecommerce channel, and a 20,000 square meter Zaragoza distribution center that moves eight million pairs of shoes annually. The program targeted cloud deployment using Microsoft Azure Services and an enterprise integration backbone based on a TIBCO integration bus. Enterprise scale requirements included management of 1.2 million customer accounts and high volume marketing operations producing 130 million emails per year.
The Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations deployment delivered core ERP Financial capabilities across finance, procurement, inventory, and distribution, and included the Advanced Warehouse module configured for the Zaragoza site. Complementary implementations included Microsoft Dynamics Customer Engagement for CRM, Episerver Campaign for digital marketing and a digital wallet loyalty card, and Microsoft PowerBI for business intelligence reporting. Retail and omnichannel capabilities were provided by Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Retail, DOM and a Unified Commerce Platform, with ecommerce on Episerver integrated with Avensia Storefront and point of sale modernization using Microsoft Modern POS. Shop floor workforce management was implemented via a LOMAXIM solution to coordinate store labor and operations.
Integrations were explicit and centralized, with TIBCO Scribe and the TIBCO integration bus connecting the ERP Financial backbone to CRM, ecommerce, marketing, vendor portal, and warehouse systems, while Azure cloud services hosted platform services and data flows. A vendor portal was provisioned on Microsoft SharePoint to manage supplier interactions and document exchange. Data integration patterns addressed transactional flows between POS in 210 stores, the Zaragoza distribution center, ecommerce orders, and customer engagement systems to support omnichannel order orchestration and inventory visibility.
Governance and organizational changes were driven by the TOGAF enterprise solution architecture, accompanied by a reorganization of the IT department, new staffing, updated methodologies and tooling, and an explicit change management program. Implementation governance reported into executive leadership, coordinating phased rollouts across stores, the ecommerce channel, and the central warehouse. Operational handoff included defining support processes and responsibilities for cloud operations and integration maintenance.
Lifecycle management activities included an application upgrade path for Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, moving the implementation from version 8.1.3 to 10.0.2 to maintain platform currency and supportability. The overall program aligned Merkal Calzados technology systems around Microsoft cloud services, with Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations positioned as the ERP Financial core for enterprise finance and operational processes.

In 2017 Merkal Calzados implemented Microsoft Power BI as its centralized business intelligence platform to establish an Analytics and BI capability across retail, ecommerce and warehouse operations. Microsoft Power BI was deployed as part of an enterprise cloud program designed with TOGAF, with all solutions hosted on Microsoft Azure Services and data orchestration via the TIBCO integration bus, aligning the BI layer with the company cloud architecture.
The implementation delivered a mix of governed operational and executive reporting, plus self service analytics for merchandising, supply chain, finance and marketing teams. Microsoft Power BI ingested source data from Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Dynamics Customer Engagement, Episerver ecommerce and campaign systems, Microsoft Modern POS across 210 stores, the Zaragoza advanced warehouse and Avensia storefront integrations, using TIBCO Scribe and Azure services for ETL and staged datasets.
Rollout and operational scope covered executive dashboards, store operations analytics, inventory and warehouse performance reporting, and customer insights tied to a 1.2 million account marketing base and ecommerce telemetry. Governance was formalized within the TOGAF enterprise solution architecture, with a reorganized IT department, new resources, standardized methodologies and change management to support BI adoption and data governance.
Microsoft Power BI was positioned to unify reporting across the broader Microsoft application portfolio and to support platform lifecycle activities including the upgrade of Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations from 8.1.3 to 10.0.2, ensuring BI models and feeds remained aligned with updated ERP schemas and omnichannel retail data flows.
