The Smart Factory production management system focused on production control, planning, processing, inspection and shipping, and was developed using SAP Cloud Platform and SAP Leonardo to enable visualization, automation and machine learning driven decision support. Core functional capabilities implemented in the factory solution included automated image analysis for inspection, workflow automation for allocation of manufacturing tasks, and real time visualization of production status to reduce reliance on expert tacit knowledge.
Order, manufacturing and inspection data were seamlessly connected and allocated across the production management solution, creating a data flow that supported product quality and yield improvements at plant sites producing MicroThin TM and other copper foil products. Mitsui Kinzoku engaged SAP Japan and consulting firm QUNIE CORPORATION to provide platform and consulting support, with approximately 150 man months of consulting effort reported in system development, and an operational launch beginning in December 2019 with broader go live activity around May 2020.
Governance and operational transformation were driven by strategy development and operational reform consulting from QUNIE, aligning the Smart Factory program with Mitsui Kinzoku s Medium Term Management Plan and its Taking full advantage of Material Intelligence slogan. The project received external recognition, winning the SAP Innovation Awards 2020 Technology Disruptor award and contributing to reported improvements in product quality and yield, with an explicit statement that the upfront investment is expected to be recovered within two years.

The project execution relied on coordinated testing and cutover sequencing across the 27 companies, with cooperating companies contributing to local validation and user readiness activities.
A migration test revealed unexpected trouble after testing, and as a result the planned October 2020 production start was postponed to February 2021. Project governance remained with the internal project team, supplemented by cooperating companies and HR and general affairs stakeholders, and project communications and remediation work required extended effort by the team members who were responsible for the system.
