In 2022, Norges Bank's CBDC sandbox was used in experimentation with Hyperledger Besu deployed as a multi node private permissioned network to demonstrate central bank token issuance and commercial bank wallet interactions. The work leveraged the Norges Bank published sandbox token definition based on the ERC-20 standard, enabling token minting, token lifecycle simulation, and on chain transfers as part of a controlled simulation environment.
Hyperledger Besu was operated as an Ethereum client hosting the ERC-20 based CBDC smart contract and supporting node consensus and access controls. Functional capabilities exercised included token minting, on chain transfers, customer wallet creation, balance retrieval, and embedded non custodial wallet flows, with private key management explored using the open source ethers library and CBDC fulfillment services implemented to manage account creation and transaction orchestration.
Integration patterns focused on Temenos adaptor framework connections to DLT platform APIs, emitting business events to mirror bank wallet balances into core banking suspense accounts to support CBDC liquidity management. Orchestration demonstrated included deposit account fund reservation, on chain transfer execution to customer wallets, and deposit balance finalization, illustrating commercial bank touchpoints such as KYC, wallet servicing, and on off ramps between CBDC wallets and deposit accounts.
Governance and rollout were exercised within a sandboxed simulation, emphasizing permissioned node governance and smart contract token definitions published by Norges Bank for controlled testing. Hyperledger Besu as a Blockchain Platform supported the end to end retail CBDC use cases in these tests, successfully demonstrating central bank token issuance to commercial bank wallets and customer to customer on chain transfers.
