In 2020, NYC Health + Hospitals implemented Epic Hyperdrive as an API Management initiative to centralize API access for patient scheduling, testing, and vaccination workflows. The rollout was led by an Assistant Director of IT Services who served as lead technical project manager for the Epic Hyperdrive web migration from Epic Hyperspace, aligning the web front end with API governance requirements and operational objectives.
Epic Hyperdrive was configured to expose controlled APIs for appointment scheduling, patient registration, test order submission, and automated appointment reminders, reflecting typical API Management capabilities such as access control, endpoint publishing, and request routing. Configuration work focused on mapping clinical scheduling flows and surgery department reminder sequences into API-driven services, and on surfacing result delivery and notification endpoints for COVID PCR and antigen testing.
The implementation supported a broad operational footprint, covering 41 brick and mortar testing locations and 14 mobile test sites, 11 acute care hospital vaccination centers, and 3 mass-vaccination centers including Citi Field, as well as surgery departments where reminder automation was active. The project explicitly included the Epic Hyperspace to Epic Hyperdrive web migration as part of the integration and cutover plan, preserving clinical record access while shifting surface interactions to API-managed web endpoints.
Governance and rollout followed an IT service model with a single technical project lead coordinating change control, phased site onboarding, and training for clinical schedulers and IT operations staff. Workflows for appointment reminders and pre-operative compliance were restructured to run through the newly published Epic Hyperdrive APIs, with operational support channels established for site level issues and API incident handling.
The deployment of Epic Hyperdrive within an API Management role enabled an automated patient appointment reminder system in surgery departments, explicitly resulting in reduced patient no-shows and improved pre-operative compliance according to project notes. NYC Health + Hospitals Epic Hyperdrive API Management implementation therefore combined web migration, API surface standardization, and operational rollout across testing and vaccination sites to support pandemic response and routine surgical scheduling.
