In 2017, Onslow County Schools launched Onslow Virtual Academy using Edmentum EdOptions Academy to provide flexible, in-district K through 12 virtual learning for a highly transient military connected student population in North Carolina. The district implemented Edmentum EdOptions Academy under the Learning and Development category to centralize online course delivery and expand access to core and elective coursework outside traditional seat time.
Implementation focused on a full virtual course catalog and online instructional workflows common to Learning and Development solutions, including curriculum delivery, formative and summative assessment management, teacher assignment and oversight, individualized pacing, and grade reporting. Edmentum EdOptions Academy was configured to support teacher facilitated instruction and student self paced learning, aligning course structures with district standards and assessment cycles.
Operational scope remained in district, delivered through the Onslow Virtual Academy and serving K through 12 students with enrollment growth from 85 to about 220 students in the first year after opening in January 2017. The program impacted instructional leadership, school based teachers, student services, and district operations by shifting course access to a virtual delivery layer and by enabling remote continuity for a mobile student population.
Rollout was staged with the virtual academy opening in January 2017 and scaling across grade levels during the first year, governed by district academic leadership and school administrators. Student outcome reporting showed math and English proficiency results above district and state averages in some cases by up to 10 percentage points, demonstrating academic performance signals linked to the Edmentum EdOptions Academy deployment.

| Microsoft | Legacy | Microsoft Power Automate (ex Flow) | Process Mining | Analytics and BI | n/a | 2021 | 2021 |
In 2021, Onslow County Schools implemented Microsoft Power Automate (ex Flow) as a Process Mining solution embedded in Microsoft Teams to automate student pickup logistics and incident reporting. The Onslow County Schools Microsoft Power Automate (ex Flow) Process Mining implementation focused on parent-driven pickup workflows and counselor notification workflows that run inside the district Teams environment.
The implementation comprised a QR code driven pickup app and a form-driven bullying report workflow. Scanning a QR code by a parent triggers a Power Automate flow that alerts a teacher via Teams, and the teacher then escorts the student to the parent, while a separate online form submission for bullying triggers an automated flow that sends immediate email notifications to counselors. Microsoft Power Automate (ex Flow) was configured to orchestrate these event triggers, route notifications, and persist form data through standard connectors available in Teams.
Operational coverage extended to IT staff who built and maintained the flows, classroom teachers who receive pickup alerts, school counselors who receive incident emails, and parents using QR codes and online forms. Governance centered on embedding flows within Teams channels and email notification routing to ensure timely responses, and the district emphasized process consistency for pickup and reporting workflows. Outcomes documented by district staff include reduced student congregation during pickup, and immediate counselor notification when students submit bullying reports.
