Microsoft Microsoft Dynamics AX Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations ERP Financial ERP Financial Management n/a 2020 2020
In 2020, Pattern Energy upgraded from Microsoft Dynamics AX to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations as its core ERP Financial platform. The deployment was driven by a need to support SOX compliance across Pattern Energy’s 28 renewable energy facilities and several foreign subsidiaries with small office staffs, and to modernize financial control processes while retaining Microsoft as the ERP vendor. The implementation centered on role design and segregation of duties management, with Fastpath Assure adopted as the primary SoD and security tool. Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations was instrumented alongside a cloud Fastpath Assure instance, and Pattern Energy used Fastpath as a sandbox to build stacks of duties and roles, iterate role combinations, and validate assignments before promoting configurations to production. The team exercised role testing qualitatively, in combination, and across business process scenarios to reduce conflict risk in payroll, procurement, and general ledger workflows. Architecturally, Pattern Energy connected Fastpath Assure natively to Dynamics 365 and integrated it with third party components required for data importing and account provisioning. The cutover approach ran Fastpath in parallel with the Dynamics 365 migration, importing security and user data into the cloud Fastpath environment, and validating mappings and mitigations in an afternoon scale implementation window when connections and imports were configured. Governance was restructured to make Fastpath the backbone of security development and audit documentation, with IT and finance mapping local mitigating controls to entity specific conflicts for audit traceability. Pattern Energy’s IT and ERP teams used Fastpath reports to document mitigations, demonstrate controls for auditors, and reduce incident-driven escalations by surfacing existing controls when new conflicts arose, improving accountability across finance and ERP operations. Pattern Energy reported satisfaction with the cloud version of Fastpath Assure for improved navigation, report generation and distribution, and native Dynamics 365 support for audit purposes. The implementation story was described by internal staff as concise, and Fastpath served as the central tool for ongoing security configuration and SOX-aligned control documentation in support of the Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations ERP Financial environment.
