Microsoft Legacy Microsoft BI (SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, SQL Server Reporting) Analytics and BI Analytics and BI n/a 2015 2018
In 2015, PJM Interconnection implemented Microsoft BI (SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, SQL Server Reporting) as its Analytics and BI platform to centralize reporting and multidimensional analysis across operational functions. The deployment focused on building SSAS multidimensional cubes and an SSRS report catalog to support time-series and operational reporting needs. Development work included creation and maintenance of complex SSIS packages using SQL Server 2005 and 2008 runtimes, authoring ETL workflows with control flow and data flow transformations such as Lookup, Merge, and Sort, and scheduling processing with SQL Server Agent jobs. The team developed SSAS cubes with time-based partitions, created perspectives, named queries, calculated measures and KPIs, and produced PowerPivot charts and slicers to complement SSRS report consumption of cube data. Data integration centered on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 as the BI engine with Oracle 10g R2 identified as an upstream data source, supporting very large database workloads. Tooling and lifecycle practices used Visual Studio 2008 and TFS, with work executed in an Agile Scrum delivery model to manage iterations and deployments. Operational governance included production support and ongoing maintenance of SSAS cubes and SSRS reports, documentation of database system specifications and connectivity diagrams, and formalizing design best practices. The program also delivered end-user training on using SSRS with SSAS cubes, establishing report ownership and change control processes for reporting artifacts. Performance engineering activities were emphasized, implementing SSAS best practices, partitioning cubes and creating perspectives to analyze query behavior, modifying ETL packages for production readiness, and applying T-SQL and ETL performance tuning for VLDB scenarios. The implementation prioritized maintainability and operational readiness through scheduled jobs, documented standards, and production support processes.
