In 2017, Port of Rotterdam deployed IBM Maximo as the core of a Smart Infra platform, categorized under Enterprise Asset Management. The project was delivered as a mission critical SaaS solution with a minimum 10 year operational horizon after winning an EU tender. The deployment used a hybrid cloud architecture to balance on site operational interfaces and cloud based analytics for port infrastructure operations. The implementation was positioned as first of its kind for the port and intended to underpin long term operational programs.
IBM Maximo was configured to support asset lifecycle management, a centralized asset registry, work order management, preventive maintenance scheduling, and condition based maintenance. The implementation leveraged standard Enterprise Asset Management capabilities including inventory control, contractor management, and compliance tracking to meet the needs of maritime and port infrastructure. Automation mapped IoT events to maintenance workflows, enabling event driven work order creation and rules based escalation.
The platform integrated IBM Maximo with Watson IoT to ingest sensor streams for condition monitoring, and to feed data into Hydro and Meteo services and the Port Digital Twin. The hybrid cloud architecture allowed operational teams to access on site interfaces for field crews while cloud services provided storage and analytics for historical and predictive workloads. Operational coverage focused on port infrastructure assets and supported maintenance and operations functions, while providing a foundation for autonomous shipping use cases.
Governance emphasized long term operational ownership and mission critical availability, with architectural choices designed to support a minimum 10 year operational horizon. Delivery followed the EU tender and a coordinated construction phase for the hybrid cloud based Smart Infra platform built on IBM Maximo and Watson IoT. Configuration governance included staged rollout and formalized maintenance workflows to integrate IoT telemetry into day to day asset management and to enable subsequent extensions for the Port Digital Twin and related services.
