In 2021 SkyWater Technology implemented Siemens MES, a Manufacturing Execution System, at its U.S. foundry to centralize control of wafer fabrication workflows. The deployment targeted inline process control across diffusion, implant, CMP, dry and wet etch, lithography, chemical and physical vapor deposition, and metals process areas, establishing a single transactional and telemetry layer for production tracking and equipment feedback.
The Siemens MES rollout focused on core Manufacturing Execution System capabilities including work order and lot lifecycle management, equipment data collection and event capture, process data logging for fault detection and classification, and quality and traceability functions such as material genealogy and electronic travelers. Configuration work emphasized mapping tool recipes and process steps to MES operations, and automating data capture to reduce manual logging and to enable consistent lot state transitions at tool handoffs.
Integrations centered on aligning MES data stores with existing on-site manufacturing data streams, and on ingesting high frequency telemetry and FDC oriented signals from tool control and data acquisition layers. The implementation team collaborated with the site Database Administrator to ensure MES database schemas and web client components were synchronized with on-floor data flows, and leveraged prior site experience integrating external sensors and NI/DAQ style high speed data collection used for pressure, exhaust and valve timing monitoring to inform telemetry ingestion patterns.
Governance and operational rollout emphasized role based access for managers, engineers, technicians and operators, standardized procedures for lot routing and exception handling, and coordinated change control between process engineering and fab operations. Training and operational onboarding were structured to move monitoring and control authority onto the MES platform while preserving existing on-tool FDC workflows as the primary source of process alarms and high frequency sensor capture.
