Deployment architecture uses Azure native storage and compute, including Azure Blob Storage for file migration, Azure NetApp Files for shared SAP storage, and portions of database storage provisioned on 20 E series Azure virtual machines with Azure Premium SSD. The estate now runs predominantly on Windows Server with 141 servers on Azure and another 55 in SAP S/4HANA Cloud private edition, and the program decommissioned the previous Johannesburg AIX datacenter environment during its Horizon One cutover in November 2022. Microsoft, SAP and TCS collaborated on the transition, with SAP focusing on application activity, TCS supporting infrastructure build and application managed support, and Microsoft providing backbone migration and sizing guidance.
Governance and rollout are phased, described internally as Horizon One through Horizon Three, with Horizon Two focused on consolidation and optimization and Horizon Three intended for a full migration to SAP S/4 HANA with RISE on Azure. Operational outcomes reported by South32 include a two thirds reduction in database size, streamlined resourcing, measurable performance gains, improved capacity to scale for cyclical finance peaks and greater cost predictability, and a low incident profile during hypercare with only one Priority Two incident noted.
