The Access Group Legacy Access MicrOpay (ex Sage MicrOpay) Payroll HCM n/a 2004 2004
In 2004 Southern Steel Group Australia implemented Access MicrOpay (ex Sage MicrOpay) to manage Payroll. The deployment centralized payroll processing for a population of 340 employees when required and established payroll as a discrete functional capability within the finance organization. Access MicrOpay (ex Sage MicrOpay) was configured to support pay runs, statutory deductions, pay coding and payroll journal generation, aligning payroll outputs with general ledger posting requirements. The implementation included employee record management, batch processing of pay runs and month-end payroll reconciliation processes to produce auditable payroll journals. Operational finance activities documented alongside the payroll function include maintaining accounts payable records, filing source and system-generated documents, coding and verifying invoices, matching invoices to purchase orders and batching for data entry. The finance team processed supplier payments on approval, prepared early settlement discounts and material price variance, margin and mark-up calculations, posted transactions to journals and ledgers and performed month-end reconciliation of supplier accounts. Governance and workflow controls emphasized invoice verification, follow up of outstanding purchase orders with departments and managers, investigation and resolution of discrepancies and outstanding balances, and ongoing supplier relationship management through email and phone communications. Payroll processing when required was incorporated into standard month-end close cycles via payroll journal postings and reconciliations, maintaining operational alignment between Payroll and accounts payable functions.

Southern Steel Group is Australia’s largest privately owned steel distributor, and the deployment targeted centralizing inventory and processing workflows across multiple company sites. The implementation emphasized inventory management, processing, and production scheduling modules, with 4GL Steel Manager III (SM3) configured to handle stock control, processing job scheduling, and order-to-production sequencing typical of Manufacturing ERP deployments. Configuration work appears to have focused on aligning warehouse transaction flows, processing work orders, and scheduling capabilities to manage large stockholdings and multi-site processing throughput. Operational scope covered distribution centers and processing facilities across Australia, bringing distribution, processing, and inventory control into a unified application context. Integration points were oriented around warehouse transaction flows and production scheduling interfaces to support downstream operations and shop floor processing, consistent with Manufacturing ERP functional patterns. Governance and rollout followed a phased site approach, with centralized configuration governance and site-level operational change coordination to standardize processing practices across locations. Rollout activity is estimated to have gone live in 2022, with program governance centered on configuration control and operational cutover sequencing for distribution and processing teams.
