In 2022 Tanium implemented OpenAI GPT-3.5 to prototype interactive query access to product documentation and to augment security and support workflows. This work was executed from Kirkland, WA by a Technical Account Manager and Machine Learning Engineer and classified under the Generative AI Platforms category, with a focus on embedding natural language capabilities into existing telemetry and support processes.
The deployment used the OpenAI API with OpenAI GPT-3.5 as the inference engine, supported by a Python based data collection and aggregation pipeline that ingested endpoint telemetry and documentation through REST APIs into SQLite for retrieval. Complementary machine learning modules implemented alongside the generative interface included SARIMAX time series modeling, LSTM and neural network models in PyTorch for anomaly detection, auto-encoder architectures for multi dimensional endpoint data, Latent Dirichlet Allocation for endpoint clustering, and regression and Bayesian models for churn prediction.
Integrations explicitly connected the OpenAI GPT-3.5 prototype to Tanium platform APIs via an object oriented library developed in Python and C#, to SIEMs for security alerting workflows, and to Salesforce and Snowflake for churn modeling data. Operational coverage targeted security operations, product documentation access, and customer environment troubleshooting, with the prototype exercised against live customer scenarios and used to diagnose firewall and process injection issues.
Governance and rollout included guided feature engineering for model productionization, a user supervised Naive Bayes alert triage workflow to replace manual triage, and executive level engagement that included pitching a distributed memory HPC framework to the CEO. The automated triage replaced a time consuming manual method and the API abstraction library reduced customer effort by several person hours, demonstrating how OpenAI GPT-3.5 can be embedded within Tanium’s telemetry and API ecosystem to extend Generative AI Platforms capabilities into security and support functions.
