| Microsoft | Legacy | Microsoft Power BI | Analytics and BI | Analytics and BI | n/a | 2016 | 2018 |
In 2016, TaxAct implemented Microsoft Power BI as its Analytics and BI platform to consolidate reporting and business intelligence workflows. The rollout centered on Microsoft Power BI for report authoring and dashboard distribution, combined with SQL Server based ETL and database operational workstreams.
The implementation included a full SSIS life cycle, creating SSIS packages, building, deploying and executing packages in both Development and Production environments to populate reporting datasets. Database work involved creating and configuring the database with filegroups, defining tables with required constraints, and authoring T-SQL objects such as Procedures, Functions, Packages, Triggers, Indexes and Views to support curated analytic models.
Operational and platform responsibilities covered installing, configuring, administering and securing TaxAct production servers that host SQL Server and related services. On the Microsoft Power BI side engineers imported, shaped and transformed data, visualized data, authored reports in Power BI Desktop, scheduled automated refresh of reports and created and shared dashboards based on those reports to serve BI consumers.
Governance and runbook elements emphasized environment segregation between Development and Production, deployment of SSIS packages as part of an ETL pipeline feeding Power BI models, and scheduled refresh governance for report currency. The narrative maps TaxAct Microsoft Power BI Analytics and BI workstreams to data engineering, BI reporting and platform operations without asserting specific outcomes beyond the implemented capabilities.
