In 2012, UNICEF USA implemented SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to centralize finance and accounting operations under an ERP Financial program. The deployment supported management of an USD100Mil plus operational budget for eight offices across the country with more than 250 staff, positioning SAP ERP ECC 6.0 as the core finance platform for financial reporting, compliance, and control.
The implementation emphasized core financial modules and reporting capabilities. SAP ERP ECC 6.0 was configured to deliver routine and period close processes including profit and loss analysis, overhead costing, budget utilisation, cashflow reporting, asset register and capex inventory analysis, and payroll reporting. Functional coverage included general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, asset accounting, and SAP MM GIT Goods in Transit, with supporting business intelligence and standard operating procedure refinement to improve financial accounting workflows.
Operational integrations and scope were focused on supply chain and budgeting processes and on reorganizing accounts payable operations. The program included project leadership for the transition of the BCO SAP AP function to the Global shared Centre in Budapest and an HQ transition affecting eight zone offices, with transactional workstreams for goods in transit, intercompany transactions, tax and GST handling, and open AP and AR items. The team managed a vendor base covering over 3000 vendors and coordinated system testing, monitoring, and end user adoption activities across Finance, ICT, Administration and the Business Support Centre.
Governance and capability building were core to the rollout and sustainment model. UNICEF USA provided SAP functional expertise, guidance and training to finance and support teams, while local leads participated in global SAP projects and advised management on SAP based solutions for supply chain, finance and budgeting. A local finance team of five full time equivalents was overseen to ensure the skill mix for auditing and accounting requirements, staff performance, training and motivation, and to meet demanding interim and final accounts and month end reporting calendars while maintaining reporting, risk, compliance and control obligations.

In 2018, UNICEF USA implemented Sterling Background Check under the BackGround Screening category to centralize volunteer and staff screening workflows. The deployment was positioned to operationalize UNICEF USA’s child protection commitments and applied to volunteers, program staff and UNITE members in Miniapolis who engage directly with children and program activities.
Sterling Background Check was configured to support standard BackGround Screening capabilities including identity verification, criminal record checks, sex offender registry screening, and structured applicant intake for volunteers. The implementation emphasized secure handling of sensitive data and retention practices consistent with child protection obligations.
Operational governance reinforced UNICEF USA’s zero-tolerance policy toward sexual abuse and exploitation, with background check results incorporated into volunteer clearance processes and adjudication rules defined by protection and HR leads. Coverage included volunteer onboarding for events and UNITE activities and was documented in UNICEF USA’s Background Checks one pager that outlines screening scope and policy. Processes were focused on ensuring that anyone affiliated with UNICEF USA who participates in programming undergoes appropriate BackGround Screening prior to engagement.
