In 2016, Universe implemented Sift Science Digital Trust Platform to address a rising volume of fraudulent listings and content abuse across its global events marketplace. Universe is a Canada based platform with more than 3 million active users, and spambot attacks and targeted assaults on high profile events increased the need for automated protection. The Sift Science Digital Trust Platform, classified in the ML and Data Science Platforms category, was adopted to provide real time evaluation of host and user behavior and to protect content integrity.
Deployment focused on Sift Content Abuse Prevention and the platform’s machine learning model, with onboarding completed within a week to operationalize automated review. The implementation used Sift Scores to drive business logic and real time workflows, allowing the fraud team to configure parameterized rules and escalate only when manual review was necessary. Universe used the Sift console dashboard as the primary interface for monitoring model outputs, tuning rules, and conducting investigative triage.
Operational coverage included event listings, host accounts, user messaging and posted content across Universe’s global footprint, with the fraud and trust teams responsible for workflow configuration and ongoing monitoring. The team reduced their reliance on the engineering team for abuse and fraud management by almost 100% as automated workflows handled detection and initial response. The solution’s language agnostic machine learning supported detection across dialects, enabling consistent abuse prevention as Universe expanded into new markets.
Governance shifted from reactive manual review to automated, rule driven workflows maintained by the fraud team, who use Sift Scores and the console to manage reviews and tune model behavior. As implemented, Sift Science Digital Trust Platform allowed Universe to move from reactive incident response to proactive prevention while preserving platform integrity and supporting further global growth.
