In 2016, Virgin Australia deployed DataRobot Cloud to accelerate predictive analytics for its Velocity Frequent Flyer program. DataRobot Cloud is used as an ML and Data Science Platforms solution by the airline's analytics arm, Torque Data, as part of a broader reengineering of Virgin Australia's analytical capability to improve loyalty program personalization and decisioning.
The implementation emphasized automated machine learning workflows within DataRobot Cloud, including automated model training, automated model selection, and standardized model validation pipelines. These capabilities were applied to build propensity and timing models that predict when members are most likely to redeem points and what experiences they are likely to prefer, reducing manual experimentation and formalizing evaluation criteria for model performance.
Operational scope concentrated on the Velocity Frequent Flyer loyalty program and supporting customer experience and marketing functions, with data science teams using DataRobot Cloud to iterate on offer targeting and destination preference predictions. Torque Data drove the analytical use cases, shifting model development toward repeatable automated pipelines to support personalized redemption propositions and targeted member experiences.
Governance and workflow changes included redefining model development processes and assessment practices to favor automated production pipelines and consistent validation. Reported outcomes from the engagement included cutting model build time by up to 90 percent and improving predictive accuracy by up to 15 percent, enabling faster experimentation and more timely personalization for loyalty members.
