In 2019, Waterton implemented Sterling Background Check as its BackGround Screening application to manage pre employment verification workflows. The deployment targeted company wide onboarding and was operationally centered in the HR function, with documented activity by HR Talent Coordinators at Waterton Residential in Chicago, IL.
Sterling Background Check was used to manage candidate intake, reference and prior employer verifications, identity documentation and case status tracking consistent with BackGround Screening capabilities. Configuration emphasized case management and communication workflows to coordinate candidates, references, and employers and to document completion of required pre employment checks.
Operationally the Sterling Background Check process was coordinated in regular communication with Sterling Talent Solutions and multiple external parties, while onboarding data and I 9 documentation were entered into the HRIS UltiPro, creating a de facto integration point between screening results and the employee master record. The implementation supported HR onboarding across departments company wide and served as the authoritative verification step prior to entry into UltiPro.
Governance focused on centralized HR ownership of the screening lifecycle, maintaining personnel files across the employee lifecycle with integrity and confidentiality, and establishing communication protocols for informing associates of personnel changes and onboarding status. Workflow responsibilities were institutionalized through the HR Talent Coordinator role, which centralized case coordination, vendor communication, and completion tracking for Sterling Background Check.

The Onit SimpleLegal rollout operated alongside Waterton’s broader corporate applications environment where teams maintain expertise in systems such as Yardi, Concur, SharePoint, Argus, Taliance, GTreasury, and Chatham, requiring cross-functional coordination between legal, finance, and IT for issue resolution and process alignment.
