In 2015, Watts implemented Microsoft Power BI as its enterprise Analytics and BI platform to consolidate reporting and visualization across manufacturing, distribution and commercial business functions. Watts Microsoft Power BI supported analytics for sales, production support, forecasting and channel reporting for wholesale, DIY and OEM distribution channels serving North America and Europe.
The Power BI deployment focused on data modeling and interactive visualization capabilities, leveraging advanced calculations and custom visuals to replicate complex charting and table calculations previously developed for other BI tools. Implementation work incorporated star schema design, normalization and denormalization of tables for query performance, creation of views and stored procedures, and the use of calculated fields and measures consistent with Microsoft Power BI data model practices.
Architecturally Microsoft Power BI was integrated with Watts data infrastructure including SQL Server data warehouses and ETL pipelines built with SSIS, SSAS OLAP cubes and materialized views, as well as Excel and flat file sources used for ad hoc blends. The environment referenced SQL Server 2008/2008R2, SQL Server Data Tools and SharePoint 2007, and Power BI was configured to consume published tables, processed cubes and scheduled extracts from those sources.
Operational governance emphasized scheduled refresh, multi-environment administration, production support and performance tuning carried over from existing BI operations. Responsibilities included security and release management, troubleshooting report performance, and coordinating with database developers to optimize datasets and queries for Microsoft Power BI deployments.
