In 2025, Greenway Health implemented AWS HealthLake as its Cloud Storage platform to centralize and operationalize EHR clinical data management. AWS HealthLake was deployed to provide a HIPAA eligible, FHIR API based data store that supports low latency transactions and ONC patient access regulatory g10 requirements for provider access and interoperability.
The deployment architecture consisted of a multi data store model within a single production AWS account, where Greenway provisioned 638 HealthLake data stores in under one day to segregate client data and support tenant isolation. The implementation used AWS HealthLake transactional Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources FHIR APIs to serve both real time clinical queries and analytics workloads, with the initial data load completing in fewer than four days while reaching sustained throughput of 8,000 transactions per second and no API errors during ingestion.
Functional capabilities implemented include a managed FHIR server, queryable clinical data stores for population and patient level analytics, and a marketplace enablement layer to integrate third party applications. Integrations explicitly tied HealthLake data to Greenway’s EHR systems Intergy and Prime Suite and to external apps, enabling physicians to access third party growth chart and scheduling modules via FHIR APIs and supporting 47 third party applications available as of November 2024.
Operational governance shifted away from in house FHIR server maintenance toward platform management and app ecosystem governance, freeing developer capacity previously spent on infrastructure support. The rollout emphasized rapid client onboarding and data segregation practices, while product and engineering teams collaborated with the vendor to extend HealthLake features to meet certified FHIR transactional and compliance needs.
Observed outcomes documented in the implementation include ingestion of 9.5 billion FHIR resources with no errors during the initial load, creation of 638 client data stores in a single production account in less than one day, and seamless cloud migration of 638 clients in under one day. Greenway reported projection of approximately 1.9 million dollars in software and infrastructure cost savings through 2025, launch of an electronic case reporting FHIR application, and plans to use AWS HealthLake data as a foundation for generative artificial intelligence and regional population health analytics.
