In 2024 Fortegra Group implemented InRule Rule Engine to automate claims adjudication and standardize decision logic. The InRule Rule Engine was deployed as an Insurance Pricing and Rating Engine to encapsulate adjudication rules for Life, Disability, Unemployment, and Accidental Death or Dismemberment policies, centralizing decision logic that had previously resided in subject matter experts and manual processes.
Implementation used an embeddable rules architecture, leveraging InRule’s irSDK to make rules callable from multiple runtimes. Developers authored reusable business rules that captured insurer and policy-specific decision criteria, while business analysts validated rule accuracy, enabling a separation of decision logic from application code and simplifying testing and change control.
The deployment interoperated with Fortegra’s AS/400 claims processing environment through an integration pattern that included a PHP interface and an RPG application. The RPG application performed pre-processing, then invoked a WCF web service that wrapped an in-process call to the InRule engine, returning adjudication outcomes to the AS/400, and supporting .NET and web-based applications alongside the legacy platform.
Governance followed a collaborative IT and business analyst model to define, deploy, and maintain adjudication rules, standardizing how decisions are made across insurers and policy types. Rules were externalized from core systems to enable repeatable invocation, easier review by business stakeholders, and a clear operational workflow for updates and versioning.
Fortegra reported reduced manual intervention and increased consistency in claims decisions as direct operational outcomes, with business leaders noting improved decision quality and the start of quantifiable measurement of benefits. The implementation enabled the company to automate complex decisioning without first adopting a full BPM suite, while keeping the rules layer available for future orchestration with BPM when required.
