Breeze-Eastern Corporation | Manufacturing | 250 | $90M | United States | PTC | PTC Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 4.0 | Electronic Design | 2014 | n/a |
In 2014 Breeze-Eastern Corporation implemented PTC Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 4.0 to support Electronic Design for its aerospace and defense mechanical engineering teams. The implementation targeted design and engineering workflows for motion controls and mechanisms, including linear and rotary motion controls, remotely operated cargo hooks and rescue hoists for new aircraft applications.
The deployment centered on PTC Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 4.0 solid modeling and detailed drawing capabilities, with concurrent use of Pro/Mechanica for finite element analysis. Engineering activities included creation of solid models and detailed drawings with geometric tolerances, custom gear teeth and gear train modeling, gearbox clutch and brake design, linkage assemblies, and test fixture design. Pro/Mechanica was used for static analysis to optimize weight and cost while meeting load and fatigue requirements, dynamic analysis to determine system power needs, vibration analysis, limit load analysis and ultimate load analysis to establish system load limits.
The implementation was scoped to the mechanical engineering and test teams and provisioned on engineering workstations to support end to end product development. Outputs from PTC Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 4.0 fed vendor coordination and subcontracting workflows for manufacturing parts and electrical qualification testing, and were used to produce preliminary design review and critical design review presentations for customers. Engineering also integrated CAD deliverables into assembly, test and troubleshooting procedures used during aircraft pre flight and environmental qualification testing.
Governance was formalized around project lifecycle activities, with engineering managing projects from concept to completion while developing schedules and budgets, preparing concept trade studies, and producing technical reports on stress analysis and repair procedures. Qualification testing processes referenced MIL STD 810 and RTCA DO 160D environmental standards and included functionality, stress, vibration, shock, impact, salt fog, temperature extremes, limit and ultimate load and fatigue assessments.
