Queensland Police Service Government 18022 $2.3B Australia Amazon Web Services (AWS) Amazon Kinesis Data Streaming 2017 n/a In 2017 Queensland Police Service implemented Amazon Kinesis as the core Data Streaming component of a cloud first architecture. The deployment was led by the Cloud Enterprise Architect and aligned with a newly formed Cloud Center of Excellence spanning AWS and Azure, with a mandate to move ageing applications to cloud and enable event driven analytics across policing operations. The Amazon Kinesis implementation functioned as an event streaming backbone, ingesting transactional data from distributed silos and continuously feeding a purpose built Data Lake holding 5 peta bytes of information. Stream processing and event capture from Kinesis were architected to feed AWS EMR for batch and near real time analytics and an Elastic Search Engine for BI and reporting, while supporting an API based microservices architecture for downstream applications and automation of operational workflows. The Amazon Kinesis streams underpinned a facial recognition pipeline built on AWS Cloud services, which is cited as driving higher operational effectiveness for investigations. Integrations were explicitly centered on AWS native analytics stacks, with Kinesis streaming into AWS EMR and Elasticsearch indices to enable analytics, reporting and investigative query workloads. The architecture emphasized high availability and scalability within AWS, and the implementation scope covered enterprise IT and core policing analytics functions rather than a single point solution. Governance and rollout were managed through the Cloud Center of Excellence, with the architect contributing to RFP and SOW development, platform roadmaps, and cloud architecture reviews to meet availability and cost objectives. Outcomes called out in the program included accolades from state leadership for the facial recognition project and a stated reduction in operational expenditure due to lowered resource consumption on the organisation's mainframe.
