In 2022 Abbvie Ireland implemented SAP S/4 HANA as an ERP Financial application. The SAP S/4 HANA deployment was framed to support both core financial management and global manufacturing process leadership across Abbvie manufacturing operations.
The implementation scope emphasized solution design and configuration for manufacturing integrated with finance, with global ownership of process requirements, role design, master data design, testing and change management. SAP S/4 HANA was configured to address standard ERP Financial capabilities alongside manufacturing-facing transaction flows, with explicit focus on operating templates and adoption at site level.
Integrations were a central element of the architecture, with the SAP S/4 HANA environment connected to Manufacturing Execution Systems, OT solutions such as OSI PI, planning solutions JDA and Infor, a connected plant landscape and IPC testing solutions. At a site level the Bulk OSD Manufacturing Site in County Dublin used a connected MES instance referred to as POMS, and Business Technology Solutions established the technical and operational linkages required to support that MES integration.
Governance and rollout were managed under a Global Process Leadership model, with a dedicated Business Technology Solutions site lead and a team of manufacturing process and project leads responsible for design completion, solution alignment with BTS technical teams, deployment resourcing, testing and change management at sites. The program delivered an SAP S/4 operating template and established a BTS organization capable of independently managing Manufacturing Execution requirements and supporting the implemented SAP S/4 HANA solution.

The deployment integrated Power BI into existing QC and finance reporting workflows, enabling scheduled report generation and standardized visual management for daily operations.
Governance and adoption were reinforced through presentations to the site leadership team and a site visit by the EU Quality VP, outcomes included a reported 95% reduction in QC data gathering time and a 90% reduction in monthly report creation time, and the capacity planning model contributed to optimization of the testing process.
