In 2018 Ampleforth College deployed Barracuda Message Archiver as part of its Secure Email Gateways (SEGs) implementation to centralize email retention and reduce the operational burden of mailbox storage. The implementation was positioned alongside existing Barracuda backup appliances to address archive accessibility and long term storage management for the college IT estate.
Ampleforth operated Barracuda Message Archiver 450 in production, which delivered core archiving capabilities including continuous message capture, indexed search, and retention policy controls consistent with Secure Email Gateways (SEGs) use cases. Configuration work focused on retention policies and archive lifecycle settings, and the Barracuda Message Archiver user interface and cloud control menus were used to administer archiving rules and searches from a single management plane.
The deployment used Barracuda cloud storage located in the United Kingdom, which the college cited as an important data residency requirement. The environment also included a Barracuda Backup 690 appliance with unlimited cloud storage, and the backup solution provided faster, near real time recovery compared with the tape drives previously used, reducing retrieval times from hours to minutes.
Governance and operational readiness were delivered through on site training from Barracuda engineers, which resolved retention policy issues and enabled college technicians to support the Barracuda Message Archiver immediately. The college reported that the solution required minimal technician intervention to operate, and that centralized archiving management helped drive down the cost of data storage while improving archive accessibility.
