| SAP | Legacy | SAP S/4 HANA | ERP Financial | ERP | n/a | 2019 | 2020 |
In 2019 Anglo American South Africa implemented SAP S/4 HANA as an ERP Financial platform to drive a comprehensive finance transformation and to provide the insight finance teams need to act as effective business partners. The program was explicitly scoped as an enterprise-wide finance initiative focused on standardizing processes, embedding financial controls, and delivering a global finance solution across commercial and shared services functions.
The SAP S/4 HANA deployment concentrated on core finance capabilities typical of ERP Financial implementations, including a unified general ledger, accounts payable and receivable workflows, fixed assets accounting, financial close orchestration, intercompany accounting and controlling capabilities. Configuration emphasis aligned with a finance blueprint to standardize master data, chart of accounts design and period-end close sequencing, while enabling the reporting and reconciliation capabilities finance requires.
Architecturally the program established a global solution upfront and executed changes through a series of four major ERP releases, using tightly controlled change windows to stage functionality into the business. Releases were applied across Group and Marketing functions as well as core business units and shared service centres in South Africa, Australia, Chile, Brazil and Peru, indicating a centralized deployment cadence paired with regional uptake.
Program governance centered on a finance-led rollout model that enforced standardized process adoption and critical financial controls through release gating and change window discipline. The implementation narrative makes clear that process harmonization, control embedding and a defined operating model for finance governance were core to the rollout, supporting consistent transaction handling and compliance across sites.
The implementation delivered new SAP S/4 HANA technology, standardized finance processes and critical financial controls to Anglo American South Africa and its operating units, and completed four successful ERP releases as part of the established transformation roadmap. Anglo American South Africa SAP S/4 HANA ERP Financial now underpins centralized finance operations and standardized governance for the Group and marketing functions.

| SAP | Legacy | SAP HCM Payroll | Payroll | HCM | n/a | 2009 | 2012 |
In 2009, Anglo American South Africa implemented SAP HCM Payroll to centralize pay processing and employee records for its Witbank operations and broader HR administration. The deployment used SAP HCM Payroll, within the Payroll Apps Category, to unify payroll processing, employee master data and time capture for an employee population of roughly 6,500 at the site level.
Configuration and functional scope emphasized Personnel Administration, Time Management, Payroll and Learning and Development. SAP HCM Consultant activity from May 2009 to March 2012 included module-level training in Personnel Administration, Time Management, Payroll and Learning and Development, plus post go-live support and knowledge transfer to the onsite HR team.
Operational coverage linked the SAP HCM Payroll implementation directly to HR functions including payroll administration, employee relations, training and community development, performance management, talent management and workforce planning. The implementation included configuration for site specific agreements such as shift systems and bonus schemes that were required by local collective bargaining and operational rostering.
Governance was run through the Witbank HR leadership structure with the head of HR reporting to the general manager, and processes were adjusted to support HR transformation, employee relations and labour relations workflows. Training, on-site support after go-live and formalized payroll administration responsibilities were core elements of the rollout and sustainment model.

In 2020 Anglo American South Africa implemented SAP S/4 HANA - Asset Management as its Enterprise Asset Management solution, aligning the Asset Strategy & Reliability discipline with the Global Information Management Enterprise Applications portfolio. The deployment was positioned within the Enterprise Applications group of GIM which manages the full life cycle of business applications for Finance, Supply Chain, Human Resources, and Asset Strategy & Reliability, establishing a formal relationship between AS&R and EA for solution direction and roadmap governance.
SAP S/4 HANA - Asset Management was configured to support core asset management responsibilities including setting asset strategies, defining maintenance and reliability tactics, and formalizing data standards and processes across the asset life cycle. The implementation targeted Maintenance Work Management workflows and embedded SAP PM data structures, with an explicit focus on module roadmap alignment and the definition of performance metrics and reporting capabilities tied to maintenance and reliability outcomes.
The EAM implementation was integrated into the broader ERP technology stack through application integration, enterprise reporting, business intelligence and analytics, mobile enablement of ERP functionality, business process management and intelligent automation. Operational coverage was defined to span business units and geographies, supporting AS&R requirements across all operations and maintaining alignment with Finance, Supply Chain and HR systems for transactional and planning data flows.
Governance and process restructuring were formalized through a dedicated EA liaison role responsible for engaging functional leadership, collecting and prioritizing application demand, defining function specific roadmaps and budgets, and running cross functional forums. This role also served as the escalation point for application support incidents, managed upward escalation and coordinated capacity planning and skill requirements in liaison with global EA leadership and service providers.
The program emphasis was explicitly linked to the P101 initiative, aiming to lift asset management practices across all operations to improve and sustain equipment health, enhance reliability and propagate good work practices, thereby contributing to the companys Burning Ambition. Implementation narratives focused on standardizing EAM processes, enforcing data standards and institutionalizing maintenance work management and reporting disciplines rather than quantifying financial or performance outcomes.
