In 2016, AstraZeneca implemented Workday Absence Management as part of a global HR improvement program. The deployment targeted centralized absence and leave handling under the Absence and Leave Management category and extended capabilities already established through AstraZeneca's broader Workday HCM deployment.
The implementation of Workday Absence Management included configuration of absence and time tracking workflows, absence plans and accrual rules, leave request and approval routing, and integrations into compensation and payroll reconciliation processes. Functional workstreams were organized around Workday Advanced Compensation and Absence and Time Tracking to align absence administration with payroll and benefits processing.
Architecturally the program was delivered as a global Workday HCM extension with multiple discrete releases, and specific integrations were implemented into Workday Payroll using PECI and PICOF interfaces. The technical scope included Time and Payslips feeds, single sign on, financial postings, and bespoke developments to support country payroll provider handoffs, with IT workstream coordination across payroll vendors including NorthgateArinso, BDO, ADP and program delivery partners such as Deloitte.
Operational coverage comprised HR, payroll, and UK benefits teams, and the rollout spanned over 50 countries in five discrete releases with virtual teams leading design, build, test and deploy activities. Governance emphasized quality, compliance and controls, and an operational issue management process was established to resolve outsourced payroll and benefits issues rapidly.
The delivery maintained continuity of employee pay and benefits processing with no negative impact to employees and payroll as reported in project activities, and financial controls were implemented to ensure the accuracy of monthly pension payments totaling 6 million pounds. This implementation situates AstraZeneca Workday Absence Management within its Absence and Leave Management practice supporting HR and payroll business functions.
