In 2014, BP Azerbaijan appointed Emerson Automation Solutions as main automation contractor for the Shah Deniz Stage 2 development, and included Emerson DeltaV SIS in the project automation scope. Emerson DeltaV SIS was deployed as a Security Agency Management application to deliver control, process shutdown and fire & gas safety functions for oil and gas production and operations at Shah Deniz and associated facilities.
The Emerson DeltaV SIS was installed alongside Emerson DeltaV DCS across offshore platforms and at the Sangachal onshore terminal, creating a layered control and safety architecture. Functional capabilities implemented explicitly included process shutdown sequencing, fire and gas detection interface and emergency control logic, with the SIS operating as the safety instrumented layer coordinated with the distributed control system.
Operational coverage spanned offshore production platforms and the Sangachal terminal, impacting production operations, platform safety management and terminal process control workflows. The project scope and commissioning activities were delivered as part of the Shah Deniz Stage 2 automation program announced in 2014, with major commissioning milestones and commercial gas deliveries occurring during the Southern Gas Corridor inauguration activities in 2018, indicating system operations went live around that time.
Governance and rollout followed a project commissioning path typical for offshore oil and gas automation, progressing from phased installation to commissioning and operations handover during 2018. The implementation positioned Emerson DeltaV SIS as the designated Security Agency Management solution for safety and shutdown control across BP Azerbaijan production and terminal operations.
