In 2008, Bwin Malta implemented Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as its Database Management platform to upgrade large-scale transactional data storage for online betting operations. The deployment targeted support for more than 100 TB of data and very high transaction volumes across global betting sites, positioning Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as the central relational database for wagering, odds calculation, and session state management.
The implementation emphasized database-level features including backup compression, enhanced management tooling, and database mirroring to maintain high performance and availability during peak betting periods. Architecturally the environment was built as a high-availability database tier with mirroring for failover and compressed backups to reduce storage footprint and speed recovery, with configuration and operational ownership concentrated in platform engineering and database administration teams and rollout staged to preserve continuous wagering operations.
