In 2017, Charleston Water System deployed Microsoft Dynamics 365 Inventory Management to centralize control of supplies, spare parts, and warehouse transactions across its operations. The project focused on Inventory Management for logistics operations, warehouse management, inventory control and support for procurement and maintenance functions within the utility environment.
The implementation configured barcode scanning workflows for issue tracking, receiving and order creation so technicians could scan items to associate to internal work orders and contractor jobs, and to add and receive materials into inventory. Cycle counting practices including periodic and 100% counts were enforced through the inventory modules, and inventory parameters such as in-stock quantities and reorder-points were established and maintained inside Microsoft Dynamics 365 Inventory Management accounting and inventory records. Annual and periodic supply audits were executed using those system records to validate stock accuracy.
Operational coverage included the Inventory Manager, Lead Inventory Technician, warehouse staff and purchasing departments, with regular operational coordination with outside vendors and manufacturers to maintain product availability. The system governed source document workflows for purchase orders, stock additions and invoice exceptions such as billed not received and received not billed, providing centralized control over materials, equipment and spare parts transactions across internal and external client user departments.
Governance controls were implemented for scrap removal, segregation, handling and transportation, paired with maintenance of warehouse data systems to preserve transactional integrity. Led quality assurance initiatives reduced workflow downtime and increased profits, reflecting operational improvements tied to the Dynamics 365 Inventory Management deployment.
