In 2017, Nanjing Municipal People's Government implemented SAP Leonardo IoT as an IoT Platform to power a next generation smart traffic system across the city. The deployment positions SAP Leonardo IoT, together with SAP HANA, as the core event ingestion and analytics layer for city traffic management and urban planning functions.
The implementation ingests continuous data streams from distributed sensors and radio frequency identification chips across the urban road network. Data sources explicitly include telemetry from about 10,000 taxicabs, 7,000 buses, and more than 1 million private cars, producing in excess of 20 billion sensor data points annually. These streams are combined with contextual feeds such as travel behavior, fare prices, road conditions, and area accessibility to support integrated analysis.
Functionally the SAP Leonardo IoT deployment provides real time event processing and stream analytics, geospatial aggregation, and advanced analytical algorithms for pattern detection and prediction. SAP Leonardo IoT and SAP HANA are used together to correlate high velocity sensor data with historical and contextual datasets, and to produce outputs consumed by visualization and decision workflows. The solution consolidates all information into a unified digital map that surfaces current traffic conditions and predictive status.
Operationally the system serves city traffic operations and urban planning teams, feeding monitoring, forecasting, and planning workflows with sensor driven insights. Governance centers on a centralized data flow into the digital map, enabling standardized situational awareness and recommendation outputs for planning decisions. The project demonstrates SAP Leonardo IoT used as an IoT Platform to orchestrate sensor networks, realtime analytics, and geospatial visualization for municipal traffic management.
