In 2014 Columbia County Sheriff's Office deployed HID Global ActivID CMS as its Identity and Access Management (IAM) solution to manage smart cards and digital certificates for more than 180 users. The deployment addressed FBI CJIS multi-factor authentication requirements and replaced password-based logons with Crescendo smart cards to strengthen officer authentication.
The implementation used the HID Global ActivID Credential Management System to centralize credential lifecycle management, certificate issuance and smart card provisioning. Functional capabilities implemented included enrollment workflows, certificate issuance and revocation, smart card personalization, and enforcement of multi-factor authentication policies consistent with law enforcement security controls.
Operational scope covered IT and security functions supporting criminal-justice access, with rollout to law enforcement personnel and supporting IT administrators within Columbia County, United States. The configuration simplified officer logons, increased assurance over access to criminal records, and improved CJIS compliance through managed smart card authentication and centralized credential governance.
