In 2004 Consort Express Lines implemented Epicor ERP, an ERP Financial application to unify and automate its coastal shipping and distribution operations. The deployment targeted headquarters in Lae Papua New Guinea and extended to offices in Port Moresby and Rabaul, supporting operations across 14 ports, a weekly Australia service and a workforce of approximately 800 employees across ship crews, workshop and maintenance teams, container tracking, stevedoring, agency and clerical functions.
Epicor ERP was configured with core modules for financial planning, purchase order management, asset management, workflow management, business intelligence and enterprise performance management, and the Active Planner budgeting feature. The implementation emphasized the Purchase Order Manager workflow augmented by DocLink for document storage and electronic invoice approval, and the fixed asset module was used to track nearly 5,000 containers and fleet equipment including depreciation and maintenance records.
Architecturally Epicor served as a single end to end platform that interoperated with existing point solutions for manifesting cargo, payroll, time management, fleet management and job costing, enabling integrated data flows without major operational upheaval. Epicor ERP functioned as the centralized transaction and reporting hub with interlinked supplier, account, requisition and purchase order records, and it was configured to allow secure remote access to critical information for regional managers and executive approvers.
Governance and process changes formalized electronic approval workflows, centralized purchase order tracking and consolidated budgeting templates across departments, ships and sites. The implementation impacted finance, procurement, supply chain, maintenance and operations by improving visibility across the supply chain and enabling approval of information from anywhere, while delivering improved planning and budgeting capability, ease of integration with existing business applications, improved efficiency and staff productivity, and support for company growth.
