| SAP | SAP ERP ECC 6.0 | SAP S/4 HANA | ERP Financial | ERP Financial Management | n/a | 2019 | 2019 |
In 2019, Consumers Energy implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its core ERP Financial platform while migrating from SAP ERP ECC 6.0. The S/4 HANA deployment was driven by a need to standardize regulatory accounting and FERC reporting models across the utility organization.
The implementation addressed multiple configuration approaches for FERC reporting, including running the delivered FERC module and its derivation model as provided in SAP S/4 HANA, optimizing the delivered FERC module to mitigate its inherent limitations, and alternatively avoiding the FERC module by establishing a line item model through configuration alone. The project also evaluated optimizing a line item model for greater data granularity, adjustment flexibility, and explicit support for rate case processes, with ledger configuration and derivation mappings central to each approach.
Operationally the program connected SAP S/4 HANA financials with Controlling datasets, emphasizing CO data readiness because detailed cost object and controlling postings are critical to regulatory accounting and statutory FERC outputs. Core business functions impacted include regulatory reporting, general ledger and subledger accounting, cost accounting, and rate case preparation, with system configuration choices determining downstream reporting fidelity and adjustment workflows.
Governance and rollout planning focused on decision points between derivation models and line item architectures, data preparation in CO and FI prior to go live, and defining regulatory reporting workflows and adjustment approval gates. Consumers Energy structured the transition to preserve auditability of regulatory accounts while aligning chart of accounts and cost flow design to S/4 HANA financial posting logic.

| SAP | Legacy | SAP SuccessFactors Compensation | Compensation Management | HCM | n/a | 2015 | 2015 |
In 2015, Consumers Energy implemented SAP SuccessFactors Compensation in a deployment aligned to its Compensation Management strategy. The SAP SuccessFactors Compensation implementation was executed as part of a broader SAP SuccessFactors Talent Management suite rollout that included Platform & Integrations, Recruiting, On/Off boarding, Goals & Performance, Career Development, Learning Management, and Report Center, providing a unified cloud talent platform for HR operations.
Configuration focused on transforming compensation processes, job descriptions, salary structures and overall delivery strategy, with explicit ownership from the HR Technology function. The implementation included compensation planning and pay structure management capabilities consistent with Compensation Management best practices, and system controls and standardization were established to support recurring planning cycles and auditability.
Integrations were coordinated through the Platform & Integrations module and extended into the company intranet and portal platforms, including ServiceNowHR, to deliver an end to end digital HR experience. Operational coverage spanned HR Centers of Excellence such as Talent Management, Compensation, Learning and Development, Talent Acquisition, Workforce Planning and Analytics, Employee Services, and Labor Employee Relations, embedding the application into core HR and talent workflows.
Governance and change management accompanied the rollout, with defined roles and responsibilities between HR and IT, quarterly SuccessFactors enhancement release management, a Super User group to drive adoption, and standardized project and program management artifacts. These HR technology efforts sat within a funded program that included a $9.7 million investment in technology projects and recorded explicit financial outcomes from broader HR technology initiatives, including $2.8 million of waste elimination, approximately $950,000 of cost avoidance in 2019, and $552,000 of cost avoidance in 2018.

| Hitachi Vantara | Legacy | Hitachi Ventyx FocalPoint Suite | Asset Performance Management | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2016 | 2017 |
In 2016, Consumers Energy implemented Hitachi Ventyx FocalPoint Suite as part of a Field Service Solution Project to strengthen Asset Performance Management capabilities. The effort centered on supporting field service, GIS-driven navigation, and maintenance operations across the utility’s field operations and asset management teams.
Workstream activities included an ABB Service Suite upgrade and enhancements, and the design and delivery of a MIMS GIS mapping solution with integration to ESRI Runtime Content. A custom navigation solution based on ESRI Runtime Content was developed to provide map rendering and route guidance tied to asset locations, while Hitachi Ventyx FocalPoint Suite was configured to support asset performance workflows and field work orchestration.
Integrations and operational coverage were explicit focal points, with MIMS and navigation solution integration design to ESRI Runtime Content and coordinated functional work for ABB Service Suite components. The deployment scope emphasized field service, GIS, and navigation interdependencies, aligning mapping content with work assignment and field mobility use cases.
Governance and rollout activities were led through formal testing and quality assurance, with a named role serving as MIMS and navigation solution test lead to validate GIS mapping, navigation behavior, and system interactions. The program documented upgrade and enhancement pathways for ABB Service Suite and staged testing to coordinate cutover across field operations and GIS teams.
