Microsoft Legacy Microsoft Azure Blockchain Blockchain Platform Blockchain n/a 2018 2018
In 2018 Dangote Cement deployed Microsoft Azure Blockchain as a core component of a Blockchain Platform effort to enable supply chain finance visibility across corporate and banking partners. This initiative is anchored on a distributed ledger architecture provided through Microsoft Azure Blockchain and was implemented in partnership with Interswitch to bring entrepreneurs, financial institutions and corporate organisations onto a single platform. The implementation centered on the Interswitch Blockchain Service Supply Chain Finance Module built on Microsoft Azure Blockchain, configured to provide end to end visibility of trade finance transactions. Functional capabilities implemented include documented transaction enquiries and verifications, permissioned transaction processing governed by authorised officials from participating entities, and ledger provenance for supply chain events. The design deliberately omits any cryptocurrency incentives, relying instead on permissioned verification and institutional authorization to validate transactions. Integrations and operational coverage include participating banks such as United Bank for Africa Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc, corporate buyers including the Dangote Group, and small to middle sized suppliers seeking working capital. The service targets trade financing workflows and supply chain operations, enabling small and mid sized businesses to obtain funding from participating banks in a shorter time frame, explicitly reported as up to three weeks, and supporting longer sales cycles for suppliers working with large corporates. Governance and workflow restructuring emphasized permissioned access and cross entity verification, with transaction enquiries and verifications handled by authorised officials from participating banks and corporates. The rollout positioned Microsoft Azure Blockchain and the Interswitch Blockchain Service as the operational ledger for supply chain finance, providing a coordinated platform for finance, logistics and procurement functions without introducing cryptocurrency based incentives.
