In 2016, Distribution International configured Microsoft Power BI as part of an evaluation and proof-of-concept to advance its Analytics and BI capabilities. The work was executed under a centralized BI program lead who worked closely with business teams and leaders to document reporting requirements and use cases and to define technical and business requirements, architecture, and business logic.
As part of the platform architecture, the team developed a Kimball data warehouse star schema using the Microsoft BI Stack to standardize dimensional models and conformed dimensions for enterprise reporting. The Microsoft Power BI instance was configured during the POC and several Power BI reports were developed and promoted to accelerate adoption throughout the organization.
Integrations and operational artifacts included interim SQL Server table-based solutions surfaced to end users via MS Excel and Microsoft Power BI, administration and end-user support for Oracle Hyperion Brio instances, and a concurrent cloud-based Phocas 2016 implementation focused on dashboarding and end-user analytics. The Phocas engagement included solution design, administration, user training, creation of end-user training literature, and dashboard development.
Governance and rollout responsibilities covered an enterprise BI front-end tool evaluation and selection process, creation of system and project documentation using Visio, Excel, and Teamwork, and establishment of administration and training practices to support wider distribution of Analytics and BI outputs. The program emphasized centralized architecture and business logic ownership to ensure consistent reporting and repeatable BI workflows across the organization.
