In 2018, Grupo Zapata implemented SAP S/4 HANA, replacing SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to modernize its core enterprise resource planning and financial management. The initiative targeted ERP Financial capabilities to raise performance, availability and scalability for manufacturing, finance and planning functions across the organization.
The deployment architecture centered on IBM infrastructure, using IBM Power System S822L and IBM Power System S914 servers running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications and virtualized with IBM PowerVM. Storage was provisioned with IBM FlashSystem 5030H hybrid flash for low latency, IBM Tape Storage for long term retention, and IBM Easy Tier software to automatically promote frequently accessed data to flash. The environment was sized to deliver high SAP Application Performance Standard values and elevated IOPS to support analytics workloads and deliver a fast user experience for SAP S/4 HANA.
Functional configuration focused on planning workflows and finance modules within SAP S/4 HANA, with the SAP S/4 HANA instance configured to support revised planning and analytics processes. Integration and deployment were coordinated with SAP and SUSE, IBM supplied the core infrastructure platform, and Fourth Kind Solutions served as the implementation partner guiding sizing, data migration and change management. Agile development and implementation methodologies were applied to align system configuration with business processes and to migrate business data.
Governance relied on scheduled stakeholder meetings and checkpoints to keep the rollout on track, with Fourth Kind Solutions providing hands on technical support and employee enablement. Grupo Zapata reported improved performance and scalability, continuous 24/7 access to mission critical SAP S/4 HANA solutions, and reduced need for high performance drives through automatic tiering to contain hardware spend. The combined solution tied the SAP S/4 HANA application, ERP Financial processes and IBM infrastructure together to support finance, planning and analytics operations.
