In 2016, Epson Japan deployed NEC Obbligato to build a company-wide product information management platform. NEC Obbligato is a Product Lifecycle Management application Epson used to centralize design and manufacturing information across domestic and overseas sites.
The implementation emphasized matrix-BOM functionality and CAD/BOM integration modules to consolidate multi-variant BOM structures and to directly link CAD models with part and BOM records. Configuration work focused on BOM quality controls, part master consolidation, and capture of structured CAD metadata to support downstream production planning and engineering reuse.
NEC Obbligato was integrated with CAD systems, BOM repositories and production systems to provide rapid global access to design and manufacturing information. Deployment followed a pilot phase and then a full rollout across business units and overseas manufacturing and design sites, enabling consistent access for engineering and manufacturing teams.
Governance changes concentrated on centralizing product information management and standardizing BOM validation workflows across sites. The case documentation reports improved BOM quality and faster global access to design and manufacturing information as direct outcomes of the implementation.
