In 2008 Grameen Solutions implemented Obopay Mobile Payment under the Grameen Obopay Bank A Billion initiative to deliver Digital Banking services to underserved customers in Bangladesh and Mumbai. The Obopay Mobile Payment rollout began delivering services in October 2008 targeting remittances, person to person money transfer, payments, savings and credit as part of a financial inclusion program.
The deployment of Obopay Mobile Payment provided core Digital Banking capabilities centered on a mobile wallet, transaction processing for P2P transfers, and remittance routing, with module usage such as a mobile wallet and P2P transfers inferred from the program announcement. Functional workflows emphasized mobile account provisioning, payment initiation and settlement, and basic savings and credit functionality consistent with mobile banking offerings in this category.
Operational coverage focused on consumer financial services across Bangladesh and Mumbai, delivered through the joint Grameen Solutions and Obopay program structure under the Grameen Obopay Bank A Billion banner. Governance and rollout were organized as a programmatic initiative to extend financial inclusion, aligning operational teams around mobile payments, remittance handling and savings distribution while Obopay Mobile Payment remained the Digital Banking application driving those services.
