In 2021, Heron Bros deployed SustainIQ to manage sustainability performance on the Danderhall School and Community Centre project. SustainIQ, the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) application, was positioned to capture project-level sustainability data for a £16m education and community build delivered for Midlothian Council, and it is used across Heron Bros projects to centralize sustainability reporting and site performance visibility.
The implementation covered functional modules to track local procurement of subcontractors and suppliers, monitor certified timber use including FSC and PEFC and recycled content, and capture environmental management metrics for waste, energy, water, carbon emissions from deliveries and business transport, and biodiversity initiatives. SustainIQ was also configured to record social and workforce data, including apprenticeship and placement opportunities, training hours, diversity initiative outcomes, and community and school engagement activities.
SustainIQ functioned as a central platform for real-time site reporting, enabling the site team to monitor sustainability performance and to compile consolidated performance data for client reporting. The platform was used to generate evidence for BREEAM compliance and to assist with Considerate Constructor’s Scheme site visits, and it produced scope 1, 2 and scope 3 transport emissions reporting delivered to the client.
On the Danderhall project the platform enabled explicit accountability and measurement, including 98% of construction stage waste diverted from landfill and delivery of two on-site biodiversity initiatives. Procurement outcomes recorded included 67 subcontractor work packages let to Scottish contractors and almost 50% of suppliers and products sourced in Scotland. Social engagement metrics captured 1,793 students reached through 11 school engagements, 10 community initiatives, and 940 apprenticeship weeks for eight apprentices, 75% at Foundation Level.
