In 2010 Horizon Hobby deployed SAP Business One in the EU as part of a short term strategic global plan to reduce the SAP instance and create a central data center for Europe, providing a significant savings. SAP Business One was provisioned to address ERP Financial requirements and to centralize transactional financial processing for the company’s European entities.
The implementation emphasized core ERP Financial modules including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and inventory to financial reconciliation, configured to support multi entity consolidation and a European chart of accounts. SAP Business One was configured to exchange order, inventory, and financial transaction data with a second tier warehouse management system that was deployed in the European theater as a stop gap measure. The broader roadmap anticipated integration with a Red Prairie WMS for global warehouse orchestration.
The SAP Business One rollout in Europe was aligned with concurrent projects including WebSphere e commerce for domestic and international B2B and B2C, acquisition of a Transportation and Manifesting module to streamline shipping, and a US deployment of Red Prairie WMS that replaced an Infor WM module. Project governance designated a Director, Global Enterprise System as the single point of contact into IT reporting to the CIO, supported by an 11 person IT staff and disciplined SDLC project management practices.
Operational governance encompassed IT policies, standards, security measures, vendor contract and license management, and an initiative to create a global business intelligence capability. The IT organization also managed an ERP system on AS400 during this period, and the central European data center strategy for SAP Business One was explicitly intended to consolidate instances and yield significant savings.
