| Oracle | Legacy | Oracle NetSuite ERP | ERP Financial | ERP | n/a | 2017 | 2017 |
In 2017 Hortonworks implemented Oracle NetSuite ERP to centralize finance and revenue operations within its professional services organization. The deployment focused on ERP Financial capabilities to provide a single financial system of record for order-to-cash, revenue recognition, general ledger, and reporting workflows used by the corporate finance team.
Configuration and functional design emphasized deferred revenue accounting and month-end close processes, with explicit routines to prepare and reconcile monthly deferred revenue rollforward reports. The Oracle NetSuite ERP environment was configured to support review and approval of Sales Orders, to prepare and process monthly journal entries directly in NetSuite, and to enable ad hoc financial reporting for analysts and controllers.
Operational coverage centered on finance and accounting functions, including revenue accounting, financial reporting and management reporting. The implementation positioned NetSuite as the authoritative source for the BESP quarterly report inputs and for data used in Quarterly Management slide decks focused on deferred revenue, with finance teams running ad hoc reports in NetSuite to support those deliverables.
Governance was operationalized through recurring close tasks and approval workflows, including sales order approvals, month-end journal processing, and a structured rollforward for deferred revenue that feeds quarterly BESP and management reporting. Day-to-day operating procedures documented preparation of monthly journal entries, reconciliation steps for deferred revenue, and responsibilities for contributing deferred revenue slides to quarterly management materials.

In 2016, Hortonworks implemented Oracle Netsuite OpenAir as its Professional Services Automation solution supporting Professional Services Operations across services delivery, project management and finance functions. The deployment used Oracle Netsuite OpenAir to centralize time and expense capture, expense approval and reimbursement workflows, and invoicing processes for both labor and travel related expenses.
Oracle Netsuite OpenAir was configured to process expense invoices and submit them to accounts receivable, generate labor invoices, and execute credit and rebill actions when required. The implementation incorporated project lifecycle capabilities, including updating projects based on SOW and MSA contract terms, maintaining project backlogs and closures, and sending Closed Won notifications to Ops Managers and field teams to enforce billing and expense policy.
The OpenAir environment was linked operationally with Salesforce for vendor Statement of Work intake and contract review, as vendor SOWs were submitted through Salesforce for approval workflows. Operational coverage included Professional Services Operations staff, Regional Directors who used OpenAir outputs for forecast and bookings discussions, Engagement Managers and consultants who submitted time and expenses, and AR teams that received invoicing artifacts.
Governance was structured around adherence to stated expense and travel policies, verification of documentation, and maintenance of Professional Services Operations process documentation. Day to day activities recorded in Oracle Netsuite OpenAir included following up on rejected expense reports, assisting onboarding of consultants and engagement managers on core operational activities, updating calendar and holiday schedules, and responding to ad hoc reporting and project assistance requests.
