In 2020, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay deployed ANSYS Fluids to support the IIT Bombay Racing Formula Student electric car program. The Apps Category is .
The implementation centered on computational fluid dynamics workflows using Ansys Fluent CFD capabilities inside ANSYS Fluids to design and optimize radiator inclination, develop porous-media radiator models, and model accumulator cooling behavior. Configuration focused on aerodynamic and thermal simulation setups, meshing strategies appropriate for complex radiator geometries, and coupled heat transfer analysis to represent coolant and cell thermal interactions.
This effort operated within the IIT Bombay Racing academic engineering team and directly impacted vehicle thermal management and battery systems design workflows. The project informed iterative design cycles between simulation and physical testing, integrating simulation outputs into mechanical design decisions and packaging constraints for the Formula Student vehicle.
Results reported from the academic engineering use case include a 24% reduction in radiator size and weight and a 15% reduction in cell temperature, outcomes that contributed to the team’s success in the 2020 Formula Student competition. The work illustrates ANSYS Fluids applied to targeted thermal management engineering, embedding CFD-driven design decisions into student-led R&D processes.
