In 2013, International Paper Singapore implemented Microsoft Power BI to evaluate and standardize its business intelligence tooling and to create repeatable BI reporting workflows. International Paper Singapore implemented Microsoft Power BI to support sales analytics, reporting, and data science evaluation, and this work was carried out within the Analytics and BI category to inform a company-wide standardization decision.
The implementation included creation of views and interactive dashboards across multiple platforms, notably Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, and SAP Analytics Cloud, as part of a comparative evaluation of BI software. Deliverables included Microsoft Power BI dashboards and reports, sales-focused Tableau dashboards to identify opportunities, and a SQL database model for a product information database designed to replace a manual process, reflecting data modeling and reporting capabilities typical of Analytics and BI projects.
Operational coverage extended to the sales organization, data science practitioners, and marketing outreach activities, with a structured data science competition organized and hosted to expose data scientists to new business intelligence methods. The SQL product information model served as a central data artifact to feed reporting and to reduce manual reconciliation, while dashboards provided self-service visibility for business users.
Governance was driven by an evaluation-led standardization approach, using cross-tool proofs of concept to define preferred reporting views and deployment patterns. Explicit outcomes stated included tool standardization through evaluation of the best business intelligence software, generation of new insights via created reports, and exposure of local data scientists to BI methods through the data science event.
