In 2018 Liven implemented the NEM Blockchain Platform to power its rewards-based dining payment app. The Melbourne-based professional services startup used the NEM Blockchain Platform to onboard XEM cryptocurrency and enable Australians to transact with cryptocurrency in daily life at scale, positioning the rollout as a world-first commercial use case for consumer dining payments.
The implementation focused on blockchain native capabilities common to the Blockchain Platform category, including token onboarding and management, wallet provisioning for consumers, and on-chain transaction settlement for micropayments and rewards redemption. NEM Blockchain Platform configuration emphasized deterministic transaction flows and tokenized reward issuance to link customer loyalty credits to XEM transfers and payment events.
The platform was integrated into Liven’s mobile application and merchant checkout flows, enabling in-app payments and merchant-side acceptance across its restaurant network in Australia. Operational coverage targeted consumer payments, loyalty and rewards, merchant operations, and finance reconciliation workflows, with the blockchain layer serving as the settlement and token ledger for those business functions.
Governance and rollout established internal controls for wallet lifecycle management, merchant onboarding processes, and transaction monitoring tied to the blockchain ledger, while preserving app-level user experience for diners. The NEM Blockchain Platform and XEM onboarding delivered a live production path for everyday cryptocurrency transactions in dining, enabling Liven to operate a consumer-facing crypto payments and rewards system at scale.
