In 2021 Manchester Airports Group (MAG), the operator of London Stansted Airport, selected SAP S/4 HANA as its new application (Apps Category: ERP Financial) to replace a legacy ERP as part of a technology programme dubbed Project Build Back Smarter. MAG opted to deploy S/4 HANA via SAP’s Rise offering on Amazon Web Services; the implementation began in 2021 and the group went live on Rise in March 2022.
The first phase was executed as a lift-and-shift of MAG’s existing SAP ECC estate into S/4 HANA on AWS using the Rise managed-cloud and managed-services contract. The deployment is scoped across MAG’s three airports, including London Stansted, and is intended as a five-year transformation that will extend S/4 core financials with integrations for procurement (SAP Ariba) and HR (SAP SuccessFactors). Rise is listed as the delivery vehicle; operational emphasis is on standardizing and cloud-enabling core ERP functions to increase agility, automation and insight while addressing HR challenges such as reduced staffing from furloughs.

In 2021 London Stansted Airport implemented VettingGateway as part of Manchester Airport Holdings' initiative to consolidate background checks and vetting across its airport portfolio. VettingGateway is positioned in the BackGround Screening category and was provisioned to centralize vetting and background checking into a single in-house team covering Manchester, East Midlands, and London Stansted Airports. London Stansted Airport VettingGateway BackGround Screening supports core vetting and background checking business functions for the combined airport group.
Onboarding for the deployment followed a discovery engagement beginning in May 2021, with formal onboarding commencing in September 2021. Core configuration activities completed during two short onboarding sessions included uploading MAG-branded assets, user provisioning, and workflow configuration after a brief platform demonstration. The implementation emphasized straightforward, easy-to-use workflows to accelerate operational readiness for the consolidated vetting team.
The deployment leveraged a seamless integration between VettingGateway and AirportGateway from IDGateway to align background checks with existing airport identity workflows. Operational coverage was managed centrally by the consolidated in-house vetting team across the three airports, impacting security screening, access management, and HR vetting processes. Integrations focused on tying background screening results into airport access and credentialing flows.
Governance and rollout centered on centralizing vetting ownership within Manchester Airport Holdings, short form onboarding sessions for administrator setup, and ongoing collaborative feature development with IDGateway. After the onboarding sequence MAG were ready to begin using VettingGateway, and continued engagement with the vendor supported iterative platform enhancements.

| IBM | Legacy | IBM Maximo | Enterprise Asset Management | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2018 | 2018 |
In 2018, London Stansted Airport deployed IBM Maximo as its Enterprise Asset Management platform to centralize and manage a 120,000 record asset database across the airport estate. The implementation focused on on‑site operational assets including car park infrastructure, airfield fire hydrants, LV distribution boards, fire panels, CCTV, and multi storey car park commissioning, providing a single authoritative register for maintenance and compliance workflows.
Configuration work emphasized asset register normalization and import automation within IBM Maximo, using a maintained MAG Asset Integration Worksheet to ensure accurate location and classification for new assets. Custom VBA automation was developed to generate unique ARN references on import, and an Excel template was created to import asset information into Data Matrix label workflows, supporting physical asset tagging and Maximo data ingestion.
Operational integrations and coordination were executed across engineering teams, Drawing Records, Data Records, Asset Managers and Directors, and cyclical maintenance providers for fire extinguishers and hydrants. The IBM Maximo deployment supported the registration process for roughly 3,000 assets associated with the new Multi Storey Car Park and incorporated consolidated drawing register data and a full LV distribution board update of approximately 1,500 assets.
Governance activities included assisting with the MAG Asset Criticality Strategy to meet BS ISO 55000 compliance by reviewing the full asset population and preparing materials for work stream leadership review. Reporting and process changes established a monthly asset creation and amendment report, and simplification of monthly asset reporting documents reduced administrative effort by approximately eight hours per month, while day to day responsibilities continued to focus on entering new assets in IBM Maximo and issuing asset tags.
