In 2018, the Massachusetts Historical Society implemented Blackbaud Altru for Membership Management. The deployment replaced Blackbaud Raiser Edge NXT and centralized membership and events data within Blackbaud Altru to support the development and events functions.
The implementation configured Blackbaud Altru to support a conversion from a dues based membership structure to a contribution based structure, including membership lifecycle workflows for sending, processing, tracking renewals, and benefit fulfillment. Event lifecycle capabilities were also operationalized in Blackbaud Altru, covering calendar publishing, communications and mailings, registration processing, volunteer management, logistics tracking, and event reporting.
Operational scope centered on the Development Department in Boston, with the Assistant Director of Development acting as the primary liaison to technical database consultants and other MHS colleagues. The rollout included intern and volunteer training and supervision to support day to day use and data entry.
Governance activities focused on establishing protocols for constituent record consistency, relationship tracking, report production, and process documentation to preserve data integrity during and after the migration from Blackbaud Raiser Edge NXT. Blackbaud Altru was positioned as the institutional membership and events CRM, with documented workflows and role based responsibilities to sustain Membership Management and related development operations.
