Northern Trains engaged Absoft in 2011 as its functional and technical SAP support partner following a formal selection process, establishing a remote support relationship delivered from Absoft’s UK headquarters in Aberdeen. The engagement model included long term assignment of consultants to Northern Trains, a bank of hours on demand for functional support, and an agreed Service Level Agreement to ensure fast turnaround and service continuity for critical payroll support.
For technical operations Northern Trains contracted Absoft’s SAP NetWeaver Managed Service at a fixed price, creating budget certainty for technical support activities. Absoft provisioned a dedicated technical team responsible for monitoring, patching and maintenance of the SAP landscape, implementing automated 24/7 monitoring and a jointly agreed maintenance plan to enable proactive issue resolution before incidents escalate.
The implementation and support arrangement covered approximately 5,000 end users and extended across the operator’s finance and HR functions that underpin service delivery in the north of England. Governance was formalized through the SLA and the maintenance plan, and Absoft’s ongoing advisory role included options analysis and trial demonstrations to inform future SAP related decisions.

Workday HCM was configured to provide Core HR capabilities including centralized employee records, workforce management and payroll interfacing. The implementation used Workday Data Loader for bulk data provisioning and SapienZ Data Xchange to execute transactional integration and message orchestration between Workday HCM and the on premise SAP Payroll system.
SapienZ Data Xchange was run by Northern Trains to reduce the cost and complexity of the integration, and to provide simplified operation, monitoring and ongoing maintenance according to Andrew Lawson, HR Systems and Compliance Manager at Northern Trains. The integration architecture focused on data mapping, transformation and operational monitoring to transfer workforce events from Workday HCM into SAP Payroll.
Governance and rollout were managed through the HR Systems and Compliance function, aligning HR operational processes, integration monitoring and exception handling with the new Core HR platform. The implementation was reported as completed in a fast and smooth manner, within time and fixed budget.
Explicit outcomes reported include reduced cost and complexity of integrating Workday HCM with SAP Payroll and an integration layer that is simple to operate, monitor and maintain. Workday HCM now serves as Northern Trains Core HR system supporting HR, payroll interfacing and compliance management.
