In 2011, Northern Trains implemented SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to support core ERP Financial functions across its business, covering finance, HR, payroll, materials management and supplier relationship management. SAP ERP ECC 6.0 is positioned as the enterprise ERP Financial backbone for the operator and is explicitly used to manage payroll and finance workflows critical to day to day operations.
Northern Trains engaged Absoft in 2011 as its functional and technical SAP support partner following a formal selection process, establishing a remote support relationship delivered from Absoft’s UK headquarters in Aberdeen. The engagement model included long term assignment of consultants to Northern Trains, a bank of hours on demand for functional support, and an agreed Service Level Agreement to ensure fast turnaround and service continuity for critical payroll support.
For technical operations Northern Trains contracted Absoft’s SAP NetWeaver Managed Service at a fixed price, creating budget certainty for technical support activities. Absoft provisioned a dedicated technical team responsible for monitoring, patching and maintenance of the SAP landscape, implementing automated 24/7 monitoring and a jointly agreed maintenance plan to enable proactive issue resolution before incidents escalate.
The implementation and support arrangement covered approximately 5,000 end users and extended across the operator’s finance and HR functions that underpin service delivery in the north of England. Governance was formalized through the SLA and the maintenance plan, and Absoft’s ongoing advisory role included options analysis and trial demonstrations to inform future SAP related decisions.

The pilot covered operational and HR business functions across Northern Trains service areas in the United Kingdom and was governed through the Future Labs pilot structure, emphasizing iterative testing and scenario analysis workflows. Outcomes reported from the pilot included improved workforce planning and enhanced scenario analysis capability using Zing Data, supporting more informed operational decision making.
