In 2024 Petrobras converted its integrated management system from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to SAP S/4 HANA, advancing its ERP Financial platform in alignment with the company strategic plan. The SAP S/4 HANA implementation is positioned as the central ERP Financial backbone for Petrobras, consolidating transactional and reporting flows across finance and business operations.
The implementation was executed as Project tranS4mar, focused on optimization, digitization and selective process review across financial, corporate and business processes. SAP S/4 HANA was configured to support core functional areas including Finance, Performance Management, Procurement, Human Resources, Exploration and Production, Refining, Safety, Environment and Occupational Health, with embedded analytical capabilities and virtual assistant enabled searches to improve user experience and mobility.
Architecturally the SAP S/4 HANA instance runs in a single cloud environment on Microsoft Azure in an Infrastructure as a Service model, with a database conversion that reduced the footprint from over 30 Terabytes to 16 Terabytes. The conversion required extensive preparatory activities and user testing over more than two years, executed with an operational cutover window of less than 48 hours, and involved more than 500 professionals from Petrobras and partner companies.
The rollout included the system conversion and parallel implementations of integrated solutions such as SAP Ariba for procurement, Blackline for finance automation and documentation, and SAP EHS for safety, environment and occupational health activities. Since go live SAP S/4 HANA has been processing national and international payments at scale, handling payroll for more than 40,000 employees with reported reductions in processing time, receiving large volumes of supplier proposals and issuing tax documents daily, outcomes that Petrobras expects to convert into productivity gains and financial returns by 2025.

SAP EHS was implemented to leverage embedded analytics and intelligent search capabilities available in the underlying SAP S/4HANA platform, enabling mobile access and virtual assistant driven queries for operational users.
SAP EHS was integrated into Petrobras SAP S/4HANA single cloud environment hosted on Microsoft Azure in an Infrastructure as a Service modality, creating a single source of EHS data linked to HR, Procurement, Finance and operational modules. The deployment was executed in collaboration with Deloitte, SAP and Microsoft, embedding EHS workflows into end to end processes that span contracting, payroll and financial transaction processing across the company.
Governance for the SAP EHS implementation followed the broader Project #tranS4mar program governance, which included more than 500 professionals in cross functional teams, extensive preparatory activities and user tests conducted over multiple years, and a coordinated cutover with under 48 hours of system unavailability. Process optimization and selective review of safety and occupational health procedures were part of the rollout, with centralized data governance to support compliance reporting and operational control.
The SAP EHS deployment sits within the larger S/4HANA conversion that produced measurable system level outcomes, including a database reduction from more than 30 Terabytes to 16 Terabytes, a 12 hour reduction in payroll processing time, daily processing of national and international payments at scale, and an expected program return exceeding US$ 190 million by 2025. SAP EHS is therefore deployed as an integral EHS solution within Petrobras SAP S/4HANA landscape, supporting Safety, Environment and Occupational Health business functions across the enterprise.

The project moved from a proof of concept in 2020 to a pilot at the BUZIOS oilfield, starting with one unit and expanding to all units and to critical systems such as gas compression, production gathering, fire and gas detection, firefighting, and energy generation, later covering offloading, oil water and gas treatment, and water injection pumping.
Governance changes emphasized a central view of mission critical assets to replace decentralized spreadsheets and to enable a reliability culture, introducing standardized assessment templates and centralized performance dashboards. Rollout governance included phased pilots per unit and per system, with configuration controls for reliability engineering workflows and operational handoffs to maintenance and asset teams.
Petrobras reported explicit operational benefits from the deployment, including improved operational efficiency and increased machine availability, reduced failures, more accurate equipment monitoring, and reduced production losses as a result of real-time performance data. The company plans to evaluate the value returned by the SAP Intelligent Asset Management suite and to expand SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management and related solutions to other upstream locations and downstream operations.
