In 2018, Sasol China implemented the STARLIMS R&D/Quality Manufacturing Informatics Platform to digitalize laboratory operations for a new state-of-the-art laboratory in Nanjing, aligning the rollout to its Laboratory Management requirements. The deployment focused on consolidating fragmented and paper-based workflows into a centralized informatics platform, with local implementation and after-sales support in China cited as a key enabler for adoption across laboratory teams.
The implementation configured core STARLIMS capabilities for quality and manufacturing informatics, including automated generation of Certificate of Analysis reports with color-coded outlier alerts, automated return of qualification status for inventory updates, visual alerts and reminders for control limits, and standardized data management and traceability. These functional modules replaced manual data capture and enabled automation of sample storage management, reporting, and routine quality control workflows to reduce data handling errors and improve data integrity.
STARLIMS was integrated with Sasol’s Manufacturing Execution System, and the integration extended to product information capture from a canning system to improve data consistency and eliminate manual verification that product labels match CoA reports. Operational coverage included laboratory managers, quality control personnel, and the logistics team, with the logistics department initiating additional system-driven requirements such as automated label printing to be implemented as part of continuing optimization.
Governance and process restructuring emphasized standardized data management practices, removal of decentralized paper records, and iterative system optimization driven by cross-departmental feedback. Reported outcomes at Sasol include enhanced productivity, standardized data management and traceability, and significantly reduced risks from analytical data input errors, while the platform continues to be expanded to align with Sasol’s quality and compliance objectives.
