In 2018, Sasol implemented SAP S/4 HANA as the foundation for its ERP Financial modernization, transitioning from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to a modern S/4 HANA core. The SAP S/4 HANA implementation is positioned as the enterprise financial backbone to unify transactional finance, accounting, and statutory reporting across Sasol’s global operations.
The deployment scope emphasized ERP Financial capabilities aligned with centralized finance workflows, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and integrated procurement finance processes. Sasol retained a cloud-first posture for surrounding services, while configuring SAP S/4 HANA to interoperate with its broader SAP estate, preserving hydrocarbon management and operational process integration within the SAP environment.
Integrations referenced in Sasol’s program include a cloud-based SuccessFactors human capital footprint for HR, and full transactional procurement processing through the SAP Ariba network where Sasol processes more than 1.4 million purchase orders. The company reports extensive daily SAP activity with more than 2.1 million user steps and approximately 160 terabytes of maintained SAP data, reflecting operational reliance on the SAP S/4 HANA centered ecosystem across its 27 000 plus employee, global geographic footprint.
Governance and organizational change centered on a people platform initiative described as 1HR Business, 1HR System, 1HR Unified to drive adoption and streamline employee communication, with the HR project timeline beginning in July 2023 as part of the broader S/4HANA migration journey. Sasol’s program emphasizes coordinated planning, data consolidation, and process standardization across finance, procurement, HR, and hydrocarbon management, while aligning to SAP’s migration timeframes and a cloud-first operational strategy.

| SAP | Legacy | SAP SuccessFactors Compensation | Compensation Management | HCM | n/a | 2023 | 2023 |
In 2023, Sasol implemented SAP SuccessFactors Compensation as part of the Sasol 1HR global HR technology programme. The Sasol 1HR programme comprised 15 modules from the SAP SuccessFactors talent suite and executed a single go-live that transitioned approximately 32 000 employees across 22 countries to a unified, enterprise cloud based HR platform.
SAP SuccessFactors Compensation was deployed alongside Employee Central, designated as the single global standard database and core system of record. The Compensation Management implementation centralized compensation data and was configured to support standard compensation planning workflows, pay component definitions, variable pay constructs, and approval routing aligned to the Employee Central data model.
The compensation application was integrated into the broader HR landscape with explicit interoperability to Employee Central Payrolls operated in four countries, Workforce Software Time and Attendance implemented in South Africa, the United States, Italy and Mozambique, and SAP Concur for travel and expense processes. Architecture and data flow were organized around a cloud centric design where Employee Central serves as the master HR record and SuccessFactors Compensation consumes position, job and payroll attributes for compensation orchestration.
Operational coverage included global HR, payroll and time and attendance domains, and the single go-live required centralized governance over master data, role based access controls and approval workflows to ensure consistent compensation practices across legal entities. The implementation narrative emphasizes configuring SAP SuccessFactors Compensation within a single global data model and integrating it with payroll and time systems to standardize compensation administration under the Sasol 1HR programme.

| Emerson Automation Solutions | Legacy | Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control System | Plant Maintenance | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2014 | 2014 |
In 2014 Sasol implemented the Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control System as part of a Plant Maintenance initiative at its integrated chemical plant in Sasolburg. The project focused on consolidating burner management functionality into Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control System infrastructure to strengthen safety controls and furnace reliability.
The implementation configured Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control System with DeltaV SIS capabilities to host burner management logic, safety interlocks, and alarm management. Configuration work included SIS safety logic programming, instrument input mapping, and fail-safe sequencing consistent with safety instrumented system practices for combustion control and furnace protection.
The work was executed during a scheduled shutdown and delivered by local system integrator Aveng A and C S, integrating the DeltaV SIS into the existing DeltaV DCS control layer. Operational scope was plant maintenance and process safety teams at the Sasolburg site, aligning process control and safety instrumentation under a unified DeltaV control and supervision environment.
Governance and rollout included staged commissioning and compliance verification to meet SANS 329 requirements and to improve plant availability. The program explicitly aimed to reduce the risk of furnace failure through modernized safety controls, and the integrated Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control System served as the technical foundation for ongoing plant maintenance and safety operations.
